Reef Check Public Outreach Volunteers Needed

Do you care about the ocean and enjoy meeting new people?  The Reef Check Foundation, the world’s largest citizen-science organization focused on marine conservation, needs help from Los Angeles area volunteers at public events. They specifically need volunteers for Earth Day events in April and Scuba Show (May 30 & 31 at Long Beach Convention Center). Volunteers must be energetic individuals who are passionate about ocean conservation, and feel comfortable talking with a steady stream of visitors at the Reef Check booth. All volunteers for May and later events will be required to attend a free 2-hour training session on May 9, 2009 at 10am that includes: basic ecology of reefs and summary of Reef Check Tropical and California Programs. Volunteers who participate in the events will be given a free Reef Check t-shirt.

These events are a great opportunity to make new connections, learn more about diving and the marine world, and help preserve and rehabilitate reefs worldwide. Spots are limited, for more information contact Reef Check’s Program Manager Mary Luna.

SurfAid Continues to Combat Malnutrition

The SurfAid Community Based Health Programs are continuing to implement specialized initiatives to combat malnutrition in the Mentawai and Nias islands.

SurfAid’s research shows that the rate of moderate/severe malnutrition in children under five years of age is approximately 40 per cent throughout the Mentawai and Nias communities that were assessed.

SurfAid’s Hearth nutrition rehabilitation sessions have three objectives to:

1. To quickly rehabilitate malnourished children identified in the community;
2. To enable families to sustain the rehabilitation of these children at home on their own;
3. To prevent future malnutrition among all children born in the community by changing community norms in childcare, feeding and health-seeking practices.

Message on a Bottle Wrap Up

Featuring artwork by Quiksilver employees from a variety of departments the Quiksilver Foundation’s SIGG water bottle Art Showcase was a huge success. Each participant was challenged to design a reusable water bottle to be bid on in a silent auction. Donating their time, talent and pieces the artist were able to raise $2,000.00 for The Ecology Center.

None of this would have happened without the enthusiastic participation of our amazing artists, thank you. And a special shout-out to Bret Nicoletti whose amazing artwork raised $100.00 and featured a light box with rotating water bottle displaying his personal photography…truly amazing.

A big thanks to Barefoot Wine, SIGG and Evan Marks from The Ecology Center for all their hard work to help raise money and awareness for practical environmental solutions. Last but not least, a big pat on the back to all the Quiksilver employees who got involved we couldn’t have done it without you…and we can’t wait to do it again!

SurfAid Reaches Major Milestone in Malaria Campaign

SurfAid International has achieved a major milestone by completing its mosquito net distribution and malaria education program in the Mentawai Island chain, off Indonesia’s West Sumatran coast.

Since March 2007, SurfAid’s Malaria Free Mentawai program has reached 61,465 villagers – nearly 90 per cent of the 70,000 population – in some extremely remote areas.

Specialized SurfAid teams transported the nets up rivers by dugout canoe and hauled them through dense jungle to reach many of the isolated communities.  The teams would sleep in the villages to rollout their education program, distribute the nets to each household and conduct parasite testing.

Since the inception of the SurfAid malaria program in 2000, SurfAid has now delivered 58,517 specially treated mosquito nets and malaria education to more than 300 villages in the Mentawai and Nias islands, which includes emergency relief work after the 2004 tsunami and the 2005 Nias earthquake.

Community Hopes to Rally Support for Rell Sunn Tribute Statue

PRESS RELEASE

For the last year or two, Rell’s daughter Jan has been working to have a public statue of her wonderful mother come to be. So far, not being familiar with fund raising, she has been frustrated in her efforts to raise the relatively modest amount needed to accomplish that goal.

This letter is a plea from myself and Rell’s family to please help us spread the word about creating a commemorative life-size bronze statue of the Queen of Makaha, Rell Sunn, to be installed in a prime location near the ocean and surf on Oahu, and about how individuals from the world over can take part.

Our concept is to invite the surfing public, collectively, to contribute to make this happen. The cost of the statue and installation is $250,000, which is incredibly low for a major artwork and bronze casting, as all involved are contributing their creativity and labor for free.

It is our thought that from around the surfing world, 250 surfers will come forward who would help us honor the true legacy of Aloha that she left us all, and who can comfortably afford to donate $1,000 each to fund the statue.

In return, each donor will be listed on a plaque at the base of the statue.

Responses may be directed to her daughter Jan at Jan@rellsunn.com and for more information please visit the web site at www.RellSunn.com.

Sincere thanks for your aloha!
